My work - Transport and Tourism

Transport

I am a full member of the Transport and Tourism Committee in the European Parliament. This is a very important policy area for London. I have close contacts with Transport for London and other business and passenger organisations to discuss priorities for London in the coming years. In addition, I am responsible for linking with the UK Government on transport and tourism issues. This involves regular two-way briefings and meetings with ministers and civil servants.

The main focus of the Committee is the development of a common policy for rail, road, inland waterway, maritime and air transport. In particular this means common rules applicable to transport within the European Union, transport safety and the development of modern postal services.

Following the tsunami I have argued that our priority in South Asia must be on sustainable tourism that takes account of the needs of ordinary people.

The Committee has been very successful in the past in forcing improvements in the accessibility of public transport and getting a fair deal for air travellers who are now entitled to generous compensation for any delays. Both these issues have positive implications for Londoners. I intend continue to campaign on other important areas for my part of London, especially the environmental impact of the possible expansion of Heathrow Airport.
