My work
Transport and Tourism
I am a full member of the Transport and Tourism Committee in the European Parliament. This is a very important policy area for London. I have close contacts with Transport for London and other business and passenger organisations to discuss priorities for London in the coming years. In addition, I am responsible for linking with the UK Government on transport and tourism issues. This involves regular two-way briefings and meetings with ministers and civil servants.
More >>Anti-racism and Citizens' Rights
The EU has been active for many years in the fight against racism. This was seen most recently in the 2003 new legislation across Europe to combat discrimination.
More >>Animal Welfare
I am aware from the volume of correspondence on this issue that animal welfare is of great concern to many of my constituents and I share that concern wholeheartedly. I liase closely with a number of animal welfare groups, and I am a Vice-President of the League against Cruel Sports.
More >>Education
Education has always been very important to me. I was a teacher for 16 years before my election as an MEP and I keep up my interest in education as a school governor, member of the Court of a local university and by visiting schools regularly to talk about and answer questions on the European Union.
More >>In London
As a London MEP, I try to get out and about as much as possible, visiting schools, voluntary groups, social occasions, local fairs, public meetings and many other organisations and events. I know how important it is, not only to inform constituents about the European Union but also to obtain the opinions of Londoners who I represent in the European Parliament.
