Biography

Robert Evans is the longest serving of London’s nine MEPs, having been first elected for London North West in 1994. Under the current electoral system Robert is now a Labour MEP covering the whole of the capital but with special responsibility for 10 boroughs namely Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Sutton.

Robert is a member of the Transport and Tourism Committee in the European Parliament. Previously he has served on the Citizens Rights and Home Affairs Committee (of which he was vice chair for five years), the Development Committee and the Culture, Youth and Education Committee. Robert is a long standing member of the South Asia delegation – with a particluar interest in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and a leading member of the Georgia, Azerbajan and Armenia Delegation in addition to his continuing work with both the Romania and Moldova Joint Parliamentary Committees. He is also a prominent supporter of animal welfare both in the Euroepan Parliament and at national level.

Robert has been elected by his colleagues to chair the Labour Group in the European Parliament and meets regularly with government ministers on liaison work, particularly to do with transport.

Internationally Robert has represented the European Parliament on a Number of Election Observation Missions including Cambodia where he was the EU Chief Observer, Moldova, Alabania and Afghanistan.

Born in Ashford, Middlesex in 1956, Robert was educated at local schools before gaining a BEd and MA from London University. He then became a teacher and at the time of his election to the European Parliament, he was head of Crane Junior School in Hounslow.

In his limited spare time, Robert spends time with his family and enjoys skiing, playing cricket and hockey, visiting the theatre or cinema and spending what time is left with his lawnmower!
